LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION: Do you need a letter of recommendation for graduate school or a job? You may not be sure how to ask for a letter of recommendation or what to give your letter writer. If you are my student, here is what I would like so that I can write you the best letter of recommendation possible. If you are not my student, this guide is still really helpful and can help you put together materials for your letter writer. Asking for a letter of recommendation- How to guide
THESIS COMMITTEE REQUESTS: Are you looking for a member of your thesis committee? Just ask! But be sure when you ask you do the following: 1) explain what your project is, 2) provide a writing sample, and 3) explain why you think that the professor will be a good fit for you and your project. This last part is the part most students forget to do. Go beyond "so and so said you are helpful" and look up the person's research. Do they align with your interests topically or methodologically? Figure out how they are a good fit and let them know why. ANATOMY OF AN EMAIL: Working with college students who are soon to be in the working world, I see a lot of emails mistakes repeated so often that I assume there are not many (or any) classes in high school that teach email etiquette. This article is for those students and others who find themselves needing to communicate professionally via email but have not had any formal orientation to the anatomy of a professional email. In this article I will cover the following basics, which are areas in which I most often see errors: Address fields: To, CC, and BCC; Replying to emails: Reply, Reply all, and Forward; Salutations and valedictions; What to call the person you writing to; Sending attachments. |
student projects
My students are up to a lot of good! From working with non-profit organizations to help them get their services into the community in the most effective way, to examining racial discrimination in policing in their community, to creating informational website on topics that they are studying, to working on independent research projects and scholarship outside of the classroom, they are keeping busy and changing the world!
