Community engaged research is my passion
I am passionate about working with community organizations on research projects that can help them build their capacity and be more effective advocates. I have partnered with a broad range of nonprofit organizations and other community partners both as a consultant and volunteer. The range of work I have done spans the spectrum from providing initial training or advice on projects, to completing entire projects, to longer term partnerships that have involved working together over several projects. I have done this work in consultation with community organizations in ways that have involved more traditional consulting, in which I provide a research service or consultation, to more collaborative partnerships that involved incorporating community members into the process of research design and data collection. When working with students furthers organizational missions, I have also facilitated student-researcher-community collaborations.

Before my current gig as a sociology professor I worked professionally as the senior researcher at two nonprofit organizations. Since then I have continued to consult with nonprofits and grassroots organizations and have seven years of consulting experience. Please reach out if you work with a human service or social justice organization and want assistance developing evidence based programs, communicating data to stakeholders or the public, or you have research needs (surveys, focus groups, needs assessments, program evaluations, and more) contact me!

Sample MOU for doing community engaged research in the classroom
Before doing any community engaged work, it is important to clearly discuss project goals, resources, equity, and expectations. Developing a Memorandum of understanding (MOU) allows these issues to be clearly discussed between the researcher and community organization. This is a sample MOU for community engaged projects that involve a college class. |
